The effects of a housing slump are rippling through Shasta County’s economy, with decreased retail sales, spikes in home foreclosures and bankruptcy filings, and a drop in charitable giving.
“Housing is certainly the primary thing,” said bankruptcy attorney Dennis Cowan, whose office has been swamped with financially distressed clients. He’s booked six weeks out.

Some Wyoming lawmakers say recent, sharply lower revenue projections could mean that the state can’t afford to offer residents a break on residential property taxes. State revenue forecasters in October had predicted that Wyoming would have more than $900 million in extra revenue for the fiscal year that begins this July. But in a new report released Friday, they said the state will only have about $260 million extra. Gov. Dave Freudenthal is proposing a $39-million property tax break program. Legislators have floated other tax break ideas of their own.
